Learning to fly is a personal challenge that offers a chance to do something really different. The process can teach you as much about yourself and your skills as about flying an aircraft. You will develop improved self discipline and self-analysis as you learn to safely operate these machines.

Learning to fly is not as hard as you might think. In fact, each year many people of all ages and from all walks of life learn to fly. You can start learning at any age, though you must be 16 years old to obtain a student pilot’s licence (SPL), and 17 yrs to obtain a private pilot’s licence (PPL).

There are two stages of training for the PPL - up to the General Flying phase and then navigation training phase to take you through to the full Private Pilot Licence.

Educational Requirements
There are no formal educational qualifications needed to train as a private pilot. Many pilots who fly for recreational purposes have little formal education. The education level needed to pass the private pilot’s (aeroplane) licence examinations set by CAD Maldives is well within the scope of most people. The only requirement is to be able to speak, read, write and understand the English language.

However, if you intend to persue a carreer as an Airline Pilot and work towards the professional licence, please refer to the Prospectus for Educational Requirements. It is advisable that you possess the required academic criteria of your prospective employer(s).

Applicant could embark on a Maldivian CAD/ICAO PPL, which includes a total of 210 hrs of class room lectures, 35 hrs of flight time in a Cessna 150 single engine aircraft to meet the Private Pilot Licence qualifying criteria. The flying time of 35 hrs will include 25 hrs of Dual instructions & 10 hrs of solo time. Solo flying will include 5 hrs of Cross Country Navigation, Circuit flying and General Handling and 2 hrs of Instrument appreciation time will be included in the 25 hrs of Dual Instructional time.

Duration : 3-4 Months.

Total Cost : $ 10,662/-

The following information is for pilots who wish to obtain a temporary validation of their licences for a short stay in Republic of Maldives.

  • On full conversion details, seek advice from CAD-FCL.

Validation:

If a holidaymaker simply wishes to fly in Maldives for a short period of time, the Civillll Aviation Dept-Maldives (CAD) will usually issue the visitor with a "Certificate of Validation" upon application. This issue is normally dependant on the visitor holding an ICAO licence. The licence issued is essentially a "permit to fly" for a period of three months, and is endorsed accordingly. A medical examination is generally not necessary, however the applicant will require a full check flight prior to flying in Maldives. A validation of an overseas licence will take between one and three days, to complete - depending on how well prepared you are when you arrive in Maldives. We will generally need to spend around half a day with you arranging the licence conversion paperwork, as well as briefing you on Maldivian procedures as well as navigation differences. A delay will experience if verification of your license from the country of origin is not addressed promptly. You will then need to complete the check flight, and probably a familiarisation flight. You will need to purchase some basic documentation for your flights in Maldives. The minimum documentation includes:

  • Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP).
  • En-route supplement.
  • Maps and charts for the areas in which you want to fly.

Full licence conversion:

If a pilot wishes to hold a full Maldivian pilot licence then a few steps need to be taken. If the applicant is seeking a Commercial Pilot Licence, it is then required to complete a Class 1 medical, conducted by CAD approved medical officer. Once the medical is completed, an applicant will have to complete a theory exam as advised by the CAD-FCL, and either the Private Pilot Licence or Commercial Pilot Licence flight test./ GFT.
The check flight:
In the case of a “Validation Cerificate”, once a licence has been granted on the basis of a foreign pilot licence, all applicants are required to undertake a check flight prior to being able to fly in Maldives. The purpose of this check flight is to check both the pilot's ability to fly the aircraft, their navigation skills, as well as their understanding of Maldivian procedures and airspace structure. Depending on your skills and experience the check flight will generally take around two hours. Please note that you will generally require some familiarisation flying in the local area to get used to our procedures and navigation prior to taking the check flight.
